Your Path, Your Way: Understanding the Non-ATAR HSC at GOAL College

We believe that alongside academic learning, students need to gain real-life skills that equip them to succeed in work, study and life after Year 12. We deliberately offer a non-ATAR HSC to most of our students as we want to move away from the high stress and narrow focus of traditional schooling. We strive to ensure our students are balanced, active, healthy, mentally and physically resilient, and ready for life after graduation – whatever path that may be.

If the traditional ATAR route feels like the only path, or if you have questions about what a non-ATAR HSC really means, you’re in the right place. We understand there can be a few misunderstandings about the ATAR and what it means for your future. On this page, we’ll explain what a non-ATAR HSC involves at GOAL College, explore the pathways it can open up, and show you why it might be the perfect choice for a different kind of senior secondary experience.

What's a Non-ATAR HSC Anyway?

Simply put, a non-ATAR HSC means that, while our students complete the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), the focus isn’t on achieving an ATAR.

Now, what exactly is an ATAR? It’s a rank given to students who choose the ATAR stream for their HSC. It’s not a percentage or an average of your exam marks or grades. Instead, it’s a way of ranking students who sit a certain number of eligible exams, from the very top to the very bottom. Essentially, universities use this rank as an easy way for them to decide who to offer places to for standard ATAR-based applications.

Many students find the narrow focus that traditional schools have on achieving a high ATAR ranking very stressful and unhelpful. At GOAL College, we focus on a different kind of ranking – helping you discover your strengths and interests, and making your personal growth and real-world skills the top priorities.

But What About Uni?

Here’s a myth we love to bust: a non-ATAR HSC doesn’t close the door to university! In fact, we’re really proud that an average of 20% of our GOAL College graduates over the past ten years have gone directly into degree programs at university right after school. There are many ways to apply to university, and the ATAR is just one of them. The skills, post-school qualifications and knowledge you gain with us can absolutely get you straight into a range of degrees, without having to complete extra bridging courses.

So, how exactly can you get into uni without an ATAR? Great question! Here are some of the common pathways our students explore:

Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS)

You register with UAC (the Universities Admissions Centre) to use this scheme, which considers your school’s academic recommendation and your other achievements for admittance to degree programs.

Educational Access Scheme (EAS)

Also through UAC, this scheme helps students who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage.

Direct Application

Many universities allow you to apply directly through their website or via UAC, often considering factors beyond just an ATAR.

Sporting Skill Scholarships and Elite Athlete Pathways

If you’re a talented athlete, there are specific scholarships and pathways that universities offer.

University Diploma Pathways

Completing a university diploma can often give you credit towards the first year of a related degree.

TAFE Diploma

Finishing a TAFE Diploma after Year 12 can be a fantastic pathway to apply directly to university with advanced standing.

First Year University Courses (While at GOAL)

Some of our students even complete first-year university subjects while they’re still with us, showcasing their ability to study at a university level.

Early Entry and Interview

Many universities offer early entry based on applications and interviews, taking into account your volunteering, industry experience, and qualifications gained at GOAL.

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

This is another avenue for mature-age students or those without an ATAR to demonstrate their academic potential.

It’s good to be upfront that for some university courses that are traditionally associated with high ATAR results – like pure mathematics, science, law, architecture, medicine, and a few others – the pathway to university might look a little different. In these cases, students may need to complete a bridging course or another first-year university-level course to gain entry to those specific degrees.

The great news is that the strong foundation you build at GOAL College, focusing on your interests, developing key skills and gaining post-school qualifications, will set you up brilliantly for a variety of pathways, including university if that’s where you want to go. We’re here to help you explore all your options and figure out the best route to reach your goals, whatever they may be!

Why Choose a Non-ATAR HSC?

Maybe the idea of a traditional, high-pressure Year 11 and 12 just doesn’t feel like the right fit. Perhaps you learn best by doing, or you have passions outside of school that deserve your time and energy. Choosing a non-ATAR pathway can be a really positive choice for a few key reasons:

You Want Learning That Actually Interests You

Let’s be honest, sometimes school can feel a bit disconnected from what you truly care about. Active, interest-based learning flips that around. When you’re genuinely interested in your studies, learning becomes more meaningful, and you’re more likely to really grasp and remember things – and want to come to school! It can reignite that spark for education.

You Need Flexibility to Juggle Your Commitments

Life isn’t just about what happens in the classroom. If you’re a dedicated athlete or have other significant commitments outside of school, the rigid structure of a traditional timetable can be a real challenge, and this can be tough. We often work with families to explore timetable adjustments to help our students pursue their passions without compromising their education.

You Thrive in a Supportive Environment

High-pressure environments aren’t for everyone. If you learn best when you feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged, then GOAL College could be a great fit. We’re all about building a community where you can be yourself, take risks in your learning, and know that you’ve got people cheering you on.

You’re Thinking Beyond Just a Number

The ATAR focuses heavily on a single rank, often based on a narrow set of exams. But what about all the other skills and qualities you’re developing? We believe your ability to work in a team, solve problems, communicate effectively, and show resilience are actually more valuable for your future than a single ranking. We get you ready for life, not just an exam.
